Well, here iare some samples:
NEC 1909 17. Switches said:
...
b. Must not be placed in the immediate vicinity of easily ignitible stuff or where exposed to inflammable gases or dust or to flyings of combustible material.
When the occupancy of a building is such that switches, cut-outs, etc., cannot be located so as not to be exposed to dust or flyings of combustible material they must be enclosed in approved dustproof cabinets with self-closing doors, except oil switches and circuit breakers which have dusttight casings.
c. Must, when exposed to dampness, either be enclosed in a moisture-proof box or mounted on porcelain knobs. The cover of the box must be so made that no moisture which may collect on the top or sides of the box can enter it.

NEC 1909 21. Constant-Potential Systems. said:
Automatic Cutouts.
c. Must be in plain sight, or enclosed in an approved cabinet, and readily accessible. They must not be placed in the canopies or shells of fixtures. Link fuses may be used only when mounted on approved slate or marble bases and must be enclosed in dust-tight, fire-proofed cabinets, except on switchboards.

NEC 1947 2435 said:
Location in Premises.
Overcurrent devices shall be located where they will be:
a. Readily accessible, except as provided in section 2372 for service equipment and section 3650 for busways.
b. Not exposed to mechanical injury.
c. Not in the vicinity of easily ignitible material.

First year for closets:
NEC 1981 240-24. Location in or on Premises. said:

(d) Not in Vicinity of Easily Ignitible Material. Overcurrent devices shall not be located in the vicinity of easily ignitible material such as in clothes closets.

First year for bathrooms:
NEC 1993 240-24 Location in or on Premises. said:

(e) Not located in bathrooms. In dwelling units and guest rooms of hotels and motels, branch-circuit overcurrent devices shall not be located in bathrooms as defined in Section 210-8.

Can you imagine NEC wording something like that today - "vicinity of easily ignitible stuff".:cool:
