Outlets in laundry room

The outlet is not to serve the laundry area, but the laundry equipment.
At least one 120 volt 20 amp circuit is required in the laundry area to serve the laundry equipment with no other outlet on the circuit.
If it is a single receptacle only one outlet is provided and should be rated at 20 amps.
If it is a duplex or triplex or quad etc. multiple outlets would be provided on the circuit that specifically states "no other outlets"

You could make the argument that a single duplex receptacle is one outlet, since it is at a single point on the wiring system. Not sure how far that would fly though.

I agree with George, the laundry circuit can supply any number of receptacles in the laundry area.

I agree with George also. There is no requirement that the circuit be for the laundry equipment only the laundry area. It can have no other outlets the same way a SABC can have no other outlets.
Besides, I'm pretty sure the requirement pre-dates the electric washing machine.
