Question came up in the class,

Does a 120V-20A twist lock receptacle in commercial has to be GFCI protected?

I said YES, GFCI is required.


But some argued NO. Because not every appliance has twist lock cord end so it would not be a receptacle that is easily used.

210.8(B) Other Than Dwelling Units. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in the locations specified in 210.8(B)(1) through (8) shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.

That question came up 3 years ago. Check out the link below. It was mainly decided that gfci protection is mostly to stop the equipment from being a fatal hazard for people.
