When I worked in AZ, we always wrapped underground steel conduit with a wide black tape. Here in WI, nobody wraps underground steel conduit. What's the deal?

What do you wrap it with? I believed we used 20 mil pipe wrap made by Plymouth in AZ. Here in WI, the supply houses don't even carry it.

Different typical chemical characteristics of the soil affecting both galvanic and simple corrosion when the soil gets wet?

In my area it is never wrappred. Never done it myself, never seen anyone do it, and never seen a conduit stubbed up that looked like it had been done. Not coincidently, it is also rare to ever be able to pull old wire from an existing underground rmc. Big feeders and small branch circuits alike are usually frozen in place, locked up tight. Probably because there is little actual rmc left underground, corroded away long ago is my guess.
