Taking an informal poll on opinions of the most efficient way to handle trenches, assuming 3-wire plus ground:

PVC and copper conductors?
or
Direct buried aluminum?

Size and distance become big determining factors in some cases.

Around here there are many 1400+ foot services supplying irrigation equipment, copper becomes pretty noticeably higher for something like that.

Cablecon. All the wires preinstalled, just trench or plow it in and go home for lunch.

wow. i've never seen that before. wonder who sells it on the left coast.....

does it come on a trailer mounted reel, and you just pull it into place?
with a tugger? how do you enter switchgear and such?
or do you anchor one end, and pull it off a reel being pulled along over a ditch?

i've used mc cable that was four 500 mcm with a ground, once. it wasn't
much fun putting it under computer floor.

Search for "cable in conduit" there are others out there with similar products.

The ones I have used are on steel skeleton type reels, typically about 8 feet in diameter. You definitely need more than a hand truck to handle them, and like I said are not going to just throw them in a van or small pickup truck either. Full size pickup truck may handle the weight but may still have a problem with having enough space.

The outer conduit is HDPE and art 353 applies. HDPE can not be run exposed or within buildings so you need to transition to other raceway methods when emerging from grade.

Probably the same stuff the SCE uses for residential feeds. Don't know if DWP uses it or not.
