Two remote ceiling fans (Emerson brand) Even though I changed a code on both the remote and the corresponding wall switch, one remote still operates both fan/light units. Is it possible to have them operate independently?

With a separate remote receiver and a hand held transmitter for each fan independent control should work. Just set the dip switches in receiver & transmitter. alike. Or for wall control same thing.
Casa Blanca at one time had a C-Fan where the receiver was built in to the fan. It made installation that much easier.

Go at it again, try making a more random use of the dip switches.
The choice you made still may be to close in frequency change to give you the problem.

These days the dip switch with multiple poles usually controls a digital code, not the carrier or modulation frequency.
What you may be seeing, however, is that the fan unit will not read the dip switch except when power us first applied. Try cycling the breaker (off for at least a minute) and then try again.
If only one of the two remotes operates both fans, then it is a strong indication that the fan unit is not reading the new code. If both remotes operate both fans then it may be that the codes are not "different" enough, as was suggested.
