GFCI cord in a GFCI recep

Today we did an install for a little 2 person hot tub on a back porch. The hot tub came with a GFCI cord so my journeyman said to use the single recep exception and install that instead of a GFCI since the hot tub already had protection. Is it bad practice to use a GFCI recep for equipment that has a GFCI cord? My thought is that the single recep exception goes away in the 2014 code (I think) so this kind of install will happen all the time.

Don't have a code reference, nor have I looked it up, but from what I'm told by the guys I work with; it is acceptable to install a single recep in place of a gfci if it is for a specific piece of equipment. We do it a lot in garages for refrigerators and freezers. Or for sump pumps in unfinished basements

And for garage door openers

That exception was removed after the 2005 NEC.
