Measuring DC current

Can I get a reasonable approximation of the dc current in a 24vdc circuit by putting my clamp-on meter on the line and measuring peak current?

I have a standard fluke clamp-on. I am checking the load on a fire alarm circuit for signal-horns.

Any clamp on current meter made for DC will read it. If the rise is fast, your meter neads a peak hold function.

jim, i was assuming you were asking the question because you have an ac clamp on meter and need to measure dc for a particular purpose. If thats the case, the meter must be rated to measure dc or you wont get a reasonable approximation; otherwise dereckbc is correct.
