I have a very old redwood motel that has battery operated smoke detectors and the owner wants to hardwire 120 v detectors....my question is can I get the power for the smoke detector from a gfi

You need to call an electrician. The code on smoke detectors is actually a building code and not an electrical code. I see no reason that smoke detectors would not work on a GFCI circuit.
