I need to get some technical data on the properties of type NM cable for a code change I plan on submitting for the 2008 cycle. (2008 already!!) In particular, I need to know the smoke developed index and the flame spread rating. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: Type NM cable

Ryan,
Just talk to the conduit people. They have tons of that type of information. Year in and year out, the conduit people and the cable people battle this out in the ROPs and ROCs. These battles are often based much more on "market share" then legitimate safety issues.
In my opinion, as a certified firefighter III, the amount of smoke produced by any of the materials used in the construction of the building is so small in comparison to the toxic smoke produced by the burning furnishings and finishes that we need not consider the building materials unless they are installed in a "other space used for environmental air".
