It sounded to me like the original poster was under the impression that shunting some of a ground fault current to the bonded water pipe would rob the breaker of some of its needed fault current. But...

Dennis, whenever you give a mG measurement you must state the distance from the source, unless it is a general condition from a distant source.

Rule of thumb when you put your gaussmeter sensor...

Dennis, if your 30 mG were measured right on the pipe or grounding electrode conductor, that equals somewhere around 0.3 amps. If you have an ammeter, clamp it around the pipe or conductor to read...

Robert,
If you are interested in what actually happens (from many investigations), because the impedances of the several service neutrals are not the same, the amperages on the different water...

Bob,
If you find a definition of "objectionable" let me know.

You say that since currents on water pipes exist by the thousands (millions?) that it isn't likely that it has suddenly become...

M.D.
That is an excellent article by a well respected engineer. It is good to see an electrical condition researched in a thoroughly scientific manner. I recommend this article to all electricians...

Correction: you do not remove the connection (bond). You effectively remove the electrode by blocking the current.

Bob, how about this. You walk on the job. The electrode is there. You connect it. You then measure objectionable current. You remove the connection and supplement with another electrode.

I agree with Megawatt.
Brian, if a house looses a neutral usually some light bulbs blow out and a vacuum cleaner does not work or overheats, but usually the house does not burn down and nobody dies....

Since milligauss applies to both AC and DC magnetic fields, with very divergent health consequences, one needs to specify AC or DC. Also, what frequencies, and what kind of wave forms?

That's too bad. The 4080 was a real bargain. But the 4180 ($295) supplants it, so I guess that is the new cost of an accurate 3-axis gaussmeter. There is a wide selection on Lessemf.com.

CS: I like your philosophy. I too have chosen a rural lot with lots of trees and stray cats.

But as for mental anguish, I carry a gaussmeter. No big field, no anguish. For instance, substations...

JM, distance is a gross way of setting limits. As I said in a post, from my many measurements 300' is usually enough to put you under 1 mG. You can't tell from looking at a power line what the load...

My reaction to all the posts was I admit too short tempered. At my age (79) that happens.

Dennis, you are aware that our electric power is created by alternating magnetic fields, are you not? That a fluctuating magnetic field causes an electric current to flow?
