OK, I know I've been AWOL quite a bit lately, so I'll make some of it up tonight.

Been working on a rather extensive resi remodel. I installed a 100a subpanel in the unfinished part of the basement a couple weeks ago (main panel is in finished part) in order to supply additional kitchen stuff, and some in-floor heat.

I arrive today to start the kitchen demo and find the HVAC sub had brought in a new 1" gas line to feed a new furnace and fireplace, as well as other gas appliances:

As I start removing devices, I come across this, shall we say, unique way of grounding a switch:

Once all the devices are removed, the walls were gutted and I started to trace down where all the NMs went. I found one that went to the basement to feed some stuff down there. First, it went to this box:

Nice sheath! (Is this what is called 'split loom'?!?!):

As I open the box, I notice the ground wires:

I recently saw a where's Celtic thread, but where's 480....???

Must have missed it.:D

Great pics, 480. Looks like my old basement in the house I left a few years back. Never seen that type of switch grounding before, though. That's a new one for me.

Part 2

Part 2

From the 8B box, the NM continues through a short piece of EMT. I was thoroughly impressed by the strapping this 3' piece was held on with.

I remove the short run of EMT to find:

Back up in the kitchen, the ceiling was partially opened, and I discovered this as I was removing a switch leg to the dining room light.

You can't see it in these pix, but the white is cut down to the copper.

I just can't wait until tomorrow!

Those marks look like rodent damage.

Good eye, Sherlock. I was thinking the same thing. I've seen the same damage several times in attics, and there was always a huge pile of dried up rodent feces nearby.

And the fun never stops!

As I was removing the dining room light today, I noticed this (make note of the fixture ground wire!):

Excuse me, it's called random-oriented-strand sheathing. Some people. Harumph!

Regardless what you call it, don't your little feetsies still fall through it?

Re: those grounding pictures. Remind me of a saying used in the communications world "if it touches, it talks". Must be the same technology applied here.

Best Wishes Everyone

I don't think good old POTS would have the capability of handling over 5ka in a short circuit situation, though.....

Great pictures Ken. I started a remodel of a manufactured home yesterday. Unbelievably ugly wiring. Burried junction boxes, NM secured with nails, no fittings in boxes, and when looking in the panel I found where some one removed the main bonding jumper to put another neutral wire in. Can't wait to see what shows up next week.
