I don't think so. There might be a rule published by the gas or electric utility, however. So you ought to check with them.

Alright, thats what I thought. It seems like the power company(sdge) in San Diego county does have some sort of rule about this.I have an inspection in 45 minutes and I just found out that I am 8" too close to their gas pipe!:D

There may be a difference between your pipe and their's travelling alongside each other at too close a distance, as opposed to one crossing over the other. But it's going to be their rule that, well, that rules. Good luck.

Once upon a time when I had copious amounts of spare time on my hands, I downloaded and read the SDG&E installation standard rule book. There is indeed numerous separation requirements that they have from gas lines, as well as conduits from foreign utility sources as well. I strongly suggest you get a copy of their rule book as you won't make this mistake again. :)

In general, this is good advice. But I have to ask, whose "mistake" was this? The gas pipe is above the electric run. Which one was there first?

yeah I went out to speak with the Inspector and not only the inspector shows up but also the rep. from the power company. His tag said that he was a transmission tech.,so his realm wasnt really a little 400 amp service. He made that obvious as he began attempting to teach me about burial depth req. until he finally said,"oh the National electric code, yeah we dont go by that even though this is your trench and it is private property we still have our own depth requirements..." which was fine with me because I was plenty deep enough for him.He had some disaggreements with the inspector so I let them duke it out and fortunately the inspector was in my favor. The power company tech. wanted the service conduit 12" from the gas pipe & the inspector said 4"....so 4" it is.:D
