When a GFCI recep is installed upstream of a outlet for a whirlpool type bath tub, can the GFCI be located in another room? I have looked in 210.8 and 210.12 and have not read anything about GFCI receps being located near the area that they serve. 680.71 just says that the protection must be readily accessible. So, I suppose I could put the GFCI recep in the Master Bedroom closet?

That's where I've found them before, behind the master bedroom closet door by the floor. Not fun trying to find something when the homeowner has no idea where it is (since they just moved in) and piles of junk all over the place and it's not in the bathroom, like you'd expect it to be. Maybe putting it closer to the switch or above the switch for the closet would be a bit more helpful to anyone having to reset it. We'd have always put them over the switches when you walk into the bathroom... just easier for us... never been a design issue.

It's not an NEC issue. A GFI at any location can provide protection for any receptacle at any location.

I typically see a GFI in the basement protecting the garage receps, or a garage GFI protecting the exterior receps.

Some contractors will install gfcs in a closet and connect the garage and wp receptacles to it. Test a wp recp and it's like an Easter egg hunt trying to locate the gfic.
