the new 400a mcb panel would need to be within 10 feet of the xfmr secondary terminations.

your cleanest way is, install new fused disconnect switch on xfmr secondary, go to a wireway then to your 400a mlo and your existing 225a mcb panel.

The gear in place is all new and no branch circuits have been piped in yet, so it will be trivial to move the panel we have there over an put the 400A MCB in front of it and use the subfeed lugs.

Im thinking this will be the easiest solution and will look the best once completed.

Thank you for the suggestions/corrections all.

Also - since virtually none of the load on panel LA/LA2 (per my panel load sheets in the pictures) is continuous, it shouldnt matter that the total kVa is approaching the 112.5 mark correct?

... arent over 10' correct?:

240.21 mentions 25' (linear across the floor),
but I swear I have read elsewhere that
if the conduit path is up 30' and over and down 30'
that this total length of about 100' is OK,
just as long as the linear length across the floor is within 25'.

Any comments about where I might have read this?

You're probably thinking of 240.21(B)(4).
And though Larry's right about it usually being the length of the conductor, I think you'll find your 25' horizontally there too.

Yes, but a 100-foot conductor length limit is also mentioned.
