When an office space say 10,000 sq ft is being completely demoed and they want the electrical contractor to "safe-off" & "disconnect" what exactly does the electrical contract disconnect. If it is MC do you have to disconnect the tails at the fixture at every box? What about MC feeding receptacles? THanks.

Call the GC or spell it out in your proposal.

We typically do a 'make safe only' which amounts to disconnecting all the circuits at the source in a way that is safe and could be left indefinitely than the GC brings in demo contractors that strip out all the feild wiring.

BUT ....... every area is different, call the GC and find out exactly what they expect.

I agree that every job differes in the details.

You usually need to strike a balance: you want everything in the wall they're taking down to not only be dead, but to also have the wires disconnected from the electric that will remain. Yet, you want there to still be power for the rest of the space, for lighting as well as to provide power for the construction crews.

Yes remove the affected circuit wires from their breakers. That is one method. Also you could disconnect wires in J-boxes in cieling or wherever. But as stated above

you probably need to keep lights on & some recptacles hot for construction.

Yes there are times where reconfiguring of circuits are need or some lights/power will need to stay on. They are gutting the entire space and putting up stringers etc.

Usually we take it back to the first box secured to the part of the structure that is not to be removed during the demo, no loose hanging whips, unless it is feeding light fixtures to remain, but independently supported from any ceiling demolition. Many of the circuits will likely be reused by the new tennant, unless stated otherwise in the contract, so removing wiring all the way back to the panel would not be required. (unless stated in contract) All unused circuits are capped, and all boxes and open knockouts closed.

Can't the main breaker be shut and the demo guys cut and remove? Thanks
