A friend of mine is doing a commercial space and for some reason the owners want keyless lamp holders placed all over. The question was how many can he put on a 20 amp circuit. If we use 220.14(D) we must use the 660VA for each lampholder. That means we can only use 3 lights per circuit---(2400/660). Is this correct? geez

Seriously-- who ever puts more than a 300 watt bulb in them and today what is the likelihood that you can still get 500 watt bulbs that are A19. I see 300 watt bulbs but not 500 or 600 watt.

QUESTION 2.Is there a type of bulb that would be rated 600 watts that would work on an a19

I will be honest here, I would ignore that rule like I did not know it existed.

Not A19 but here is a 500 watt Edison base lamp http://www.amazon.com/Eiko-120v-500w-Photo-Flood/dp/B000N49KS6

Look at this-- it is for traffic signals-- so small yet 600 watts--- Guess I was wrong about A19 only going to 100 watt

Semantics???

Luminaire. A complete lighting unit consisting of a light
source such as a lamp or lamps, together with the parts
designed to position the light source and connect it to the
power supply. It may also include parts to protect the light
source or the ballast or to distribute the light. A lampholder
itself is not a luminaire.

Mine shows 600 va for HD lamp holders.
If I recall correctly, a standard keyless is not a heavy-duty lampholder.
Plus 410.103 limits medium base lamps on a generl use branch circuit to 300 watts.
Lots of wiggle room it seems

UL White Book-- In the index in Appendix C it states Keyless, see lampholders medium base-- seems to imply it is a lamp holder however

Lampholder, Medium Base

This category covers screw-shell lampholders of the admedium (E29) and
medium (E26) base sizes.
Candle lampholders are those having exposed wiring terminals or other
live parts intended for use with a close fitting, nonmetallic outer decorative
casing, which is used, in addition to the paper covering on the screw shell
and terminals, to enclose the entire lampholder and provide the required
depth of lamp cavity.
Admedium (E29) bases are not intended for use with ordinary incandescent
lamps.
Switched lampholders are tested on circuits involving a potential to
ground of 125 V.

Are lamp holders with keys available? Seriously, what is the origin of the term keyless?

Not sure but the old sockets that hung from a fabric cord had switches on them similar to lamp sockets but flat like a key-- That must be the key.????

I ignore this rule. I can not imagine the electric bill for 100 watt lamps let along 500s. 500 watt photo flood bulbs last 60 hours anyway so at most 300 watts would be practical (assuming power was cheap).

My thoughts exactly and I assume that was what Iwire was getting at.

In California the energy code would pretty much kill the idea of using keyless sockets for lighting. Depending on the use of the building the watts/sqft would probably allow only 2 lights for a 1,000 sqft building

It may be a Chipotle. Every location I have seen in Georgia is lit with dozens of keyless fixtures, mounted on rigid pipe pendants, with LED flood lamps.
