Syracuse, NY -- A 12-year-old girl playing in an inflatable pool Friday evening was electrocuted and later pronounced dead, Syracuse police said.

The victim, Paige Scheel, was filling an inflatable pool with water in her backyard, Sgt. Tom Connellan said.
According to a witness, Scheel either picked up an extension cord or electric pump that was that was plugged into an outlet, immediately began shaking and fell face-first into the pool.

Her friend tried to pull her out of the pool, but received a jolt of electricity, Connellan said.

A similar thing happened on the LSU campus many years ago during the Greek system's "South Seas Island Weekend". This event featured elaborate temporary structures erected on fraternity and sorority house properties, many of which had pools made from wood supports and plastic sheeting. During the construction of one of these structures, a fraternity member was standing knee deep in water when he reached over the side of the pool and picked up a circular saw that was still plugged in. He was electrocuted and pronounced dead on the scene.
