Does anyone know of any specific support requirements for lights fixtures that are not installed in a suspended ceiling system?

Specifically, are there any codes that require redundant support for fluorescent high bay lights in a gym? I looked and haven't found any.

I know it was common practice to provide safety chains for pendant metal halide lights, but I'm not sure it was a code requirement. And I'm sure those fixtures weighed a lot more than fluorescent high bays do.

I would check with your local jurisdiction. Where are you located?

At the least the support would need to be no less that the weight of the fixture.

A client thinks there is a code requirement for two types of support - like a pendant and a safety chain.

I think that was common for MH fixtures that were pendant mounted, but I don't know if it was a code requirement.

And I don't think there is anything similar for fluorescent lights.
