I usually work only in the residential world. A fellow that I know has opened a restaurant and wants me to add a few new circuits for him. All the original electrical wiring was done in metal conduit. Is it acceptable to use PVC conduit in commercial buildings in Florida, or is only metal acceptable. I couldn't find anything in the 2008 NEC that restricts the use of PVC, but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

But if 100 or more persons could gather in this building it could be considered an Assembly Occupancy 518.2(A), then PVC can only be used in areas not required to be fire-rated construction 518.4(B).

You might want to look at Article 518 for areas of 100 or more persons in a space , if you have 100 or more persons look at section 518.4 (A) pvc would not be allowed unless encased in (2 in) of concrete.

Thanks for the replies. Since the restaruant can easily contain more than 100 people, metal conduit would be generally be required.
