Can a NEMA Type 12/13 equipment enclosure be used inside of an electrical room in an industrial project?

I propose to use NEMA 12's at all the locations and I am getting some heat for that it appears.

Just trying to find out if there is a code that says ONLY NEMA 1's can be used in electrical rooms?

Thanks.

Yes, you may always use NEMA Type 12 instead of Nema Type 1 enclosures. Nema 12 enclosures meet all of the requirements of Nema 1.

That is what I thought, any idea why the PE is trying to make a distinction about using Type 1 in the electrical room and type 12's indoors?

He would not sign and stamp the drawings without hand writting a notation on the drawing.

2008 NEC Table 110.20 identifies the environmental protection level of each type of enclosure.

As mentioned, if only a Type 1 enclosure is needed, then all other Types of enclosures meet the needed protection, but at unnecessary added costs.
