I am doing a rather high end new build where all the bedrooms have tray ceilings.Owner is very particular and does not want anything placed in the tray portion except the center fan/light.

The tray portion is 16" higher than the soffit around the perimeter. Mfg's specs indicate units are to be placed as close to highest ceiling point as possible(min 4" max 12").

Anybody here run into a similar situation? Solutions??

Thanks.

There are a several "low profile" and "miniature" smoke alarms available on the market that do not have the same finished look as your traditional smoke alarms. Perhaps you can find a design or style acceptable to the homeowner.

Sometimes you just have to tell the homeowner how the cow eats the cabbage. I've had numerous people try to demand that same thing. I tell 'em tough, Jack. You don't make the rules.

you might get an inspector to cut some slack and let you put it in the lower ceiling, but you should call and ask what they want to see.
