having difficulty understanding exactly what series rating means. One supplier says that a 400 amp 480 volt panelboard with a series rating that has a 35 kic main and 25 kic branch breakers being series rated then entire assembly is then rated at 35 kic. Is that the way it is considered when it is in fact ul approved as series rated?

EC&M had a good article on the topic once - but I cant seem to find it now....

Bottom line is manufacturers will test certain combinations of breakers and UL list them as series rated in those combinations. (Which is why you would be hard pressed to find two manufacturers series rate to each other) But yes - in those combinations the equipment from main to branch are rated to protect at the stated AIC. It is dependant on specific model numbers and tested combinations.
