If it were specified a UL shop to fabricate and supply an industrial control panel with flange mount disconnect kit to main CB, NEMA 1 FVNR starter, CPT and miscellaneous pilot devices it will have a large width. It seems driven by the offerings of enclosure suppliers for flange mount disconnect enclosures.

Minimum width - 21".

Specify a combination motor starter from SqD, Eaton, etc. it is much smaller. Attached shows a 9.5" width enclosure.

What gives? Does anyone offer these narrow width disconnect enclosures standard?

standard enclosure sizes are driven by the marketplace. if there was a substantial market for the size of enclosures you want they would be made.

incidentally, if you want to have them made to order you can have a custom enclosure shop make them more or less any size you want. we do it on an ongoing basis.

you can also take just about any standard hoffman box in the catalog and change the dimensions on it to be what you want and they will make it that way for you. it costs more than an off the shelf enclosure and takes a little longer but you can get it. we do that on a regular basis as well. they will also cut holes and make other minor mods. cost is pretty reasonable if you stick to the things they can readily change.

What we've done in the past is used a pump panel we've gutted but left the disconnect mechanism and breaker.

You would not be alone in that. As long as you want Type 3R or Type 1 anyway.

Hoffman actually used to manufacture the standard combo starter enclosures for A-B, Sq. D and C-H at one time (no longer the case). You just could not buy them from them directly. The reason was, if that's what you wanted, you bought it from the starter mfr. and you bought the Hoffman version when the combo starter box was too small for the other stuff you wanted to add. If you want to build your own combo starter, you are 1) competing with the starter mfrs and 2) nuts to do so. If you are doing it because you perceive the starter mfrs want too much money for a compo starter, you just need to improve your negotiation skills...
