Doesn't 422.18 contradict 314.27(C)?

422.18 says use a fan rated box, if not, support the fan independent of the box.

314.27(C) says "use a fan rated box" no option of supporting the fan from the structure member.

Thanks

314.27(C) says that when the box is being used as the "sole support" it must be rated as per that section. If the fan is supported independently then the box is not the sole support.

314.27(C) Boxes at Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets.
Outlet boxes or outlet box systems used as the sole support of
a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan shall be listed, shall be
marked by their manufacturer as suitable for this purpose, and
shall not support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that weigh
more than 32 kg (70 lb). For outlet boxes or outlet box sys-
tems designed to support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that
weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb), the required marking shall
include the maximum weight to be supported.

When I read 314.27(C) it seems to me the ceiling box (if intended for ceiling fan) MUST be fan rated.

I will study it a bit more.

i don't see it as a contradiction--Chapter 400 methods will over rule chapter 300.

Not a problem
