The 2014 code cycle incorporated 430.130 under part X. This change provides requirements for branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protective devices when circuits contain power conversion equipment.

430.130(A)(1) directs you back to the guidelines for sizing branch circuit short-circuit and ground fault protection for a traditional motor circuit. 430.130(A)(2) goes on to say that the maximum branch-circuit short-circuit and ground fault protective device type and rating may be specified by the manufacturer. If specified by the manufacturer, the rating must not be exceeded even if permitted by 430.130(A)(1).

With that said, what if the specified manufacturer rating is greater than a calculated value utilizing 430.130(A)(1)? Does 430.130(A)(1) have to be followed even if manufacturer ratings and devices are specified? To me it appears that all conditions must be followed within 430.130(A) as the section states "in accordance with the following:".

Thanks for your help.

Look at 110.3(B). The manufacturers instructions and ratings are what they used to get their product UL listed. That means they have already deemed it safe to operate as installed to their instructions. So if there is a conflict between the manufacturer recommendation and the codebook, stick with the manufacturer. Hope this helped.

Stick to manufacturer if that product is UL listed already but if not i think better to stick to the code reference.
