What is the history of separating Article 700, 701 and 702

I often encounter pre-1990's EPSS's with a single ATS feeding both Emergency and Optional Standby Loads (and Legally required standby too). When was this permissible or put another way, in which code cycle did they start to require the separation that is required today?

I found language in NEC's from the 1930's the required emergency wiring to be kept separate from other wiring.

that article did answer my question. Sounds like separation requirements were at best vague prior to 1996 when, at least for non-hospitals, it was made clear that Emergency required its own ATS.
