Do you need the motion detector to be remote from the chime? There are chimes on the market with integrated motion sensors.

Yes they would be remote. Say someone pulls into the driveway or walks up, it would ring a chime. Not sure how to accomplish this.

A regular motion detector would keep the door Bell type chime on for to long, and it will burn up as they don't have a very long duration of having power to them.

Smarthomes.com has every thing you would need to set up a detection system for guest/burglar, including driveway detection

What do you get from Smarthomes and how is your experience with them?

Motion sensor ... relay ... make that a timing relay .... Gee. let's see how quickly we can make a $500 job from this!

Then again- even the pound wants more than $100 for a dog. Kind of puts it all in perspective.

Go to your local alarm supply house and they should be able to set you up with a low voltage panel with a PIR for somewhere under $200

I agree 100% and it has come up many times on the forum when people have used standard chimes on doors with magnetic switches, the coil burns up because it is powered as long as the door is open.

You could use a timer. Trigger it. It times out after X amount of seconds. Resets when trigger is gone.
I've been using timers from Alarmsaf for years. Extremely reliable, versatile and cheap.

Harbor Freight has some pretty cool stuff, and it's not expensive. I had a job in the middle of nowhere, and needed a pipe threader, no rental places within 50 miles, but they had a Harbor Freight store. Bought a threader and full set of dies for under $100. It lasted the entire job, and a couple more jobs to boot.
