I am replacing a service entrance disconnect. Presently, there is a 200 amp panel, 150 amp panel and 60 amp sub panel. The dorm manager would like to use a 200 amp service rated disconnect, and I am recomending a 400 amp service rated disconnect. Can I have some help with finding the code concerning whether I can use a 200 amp or whether I must use a 400 amp disconnect. This disconnect serves a boys dormitory and attached apartment. Thanks for the input.

You need to calculate the load. I can have 10 200 amp sub panels on a 200 amp service if the calculated load is 200 amps or less. Do you know what the load is?

As the others have pointed out, until the connected load is known and the demand factors are taken into consideration there is no way to offer an accurate answer.

With that being the case there is no reason for a 400 amp switch.
