BCP Working Space

I found a transformer installed underneath a Branch Circuit Panel. What does the code say about how far the transformer can stick out from the front of the panel? Or does it only matter if you are able to safely work on the panel?

110.26(A)(3)

(3) Height of Working Space. The work space shall be
clear and extend from the grade, floor, or platform to the
height required by 110.26(E). Within the height requirements
of this section, other equipment that is associated
with the electrical installation and is located above or below
the electrical equipment shall be permitted to extend
not more than 150 mm (6 in.) beyond the front of the
electrical equipment.

I agree with Jumper in most cases you would be permitted up to 6". You could build the panel out something like this:

Might not look the best but it is functional. :grin:

It looks rugged as hell, I bet you could lift the trans up with that.:cool:

In my case nothing was under the panel and I had to carry the conduits up 15' to a deck so I just used long struts all the way from the floor to the deck with some supports back to the wall.

I like it!

Early in the biz, I saw so many disconnects and panels mounted to the wall above the transformer that I thought you were supposed to do it that way. I was incredulous when I learned that the code specifically said 'no' to this practice.

The solution in the picture is ... elegant. Disco is out where you can get to it, it's clear that the disco is associated with the transformer - and the wiring is out of the way.
