i've got a number of conduits.... that are not on the buildings asbuilts.

my job is to locate them.. mostly 3/4" flex, from j boxes in hard lids,
going god knows where... you can shove in 120' of fish tape, and not
be able to find anything....

has anyone used any kind of locator that can be shoved in on the end
of a fish tape, that can be picked up by a detector? like a sonde for
underground pipe locating, but small enough to be used in a 3/4" flex?

i can't blow air thru them... the flex dissipates it too much to be detectable.

first flex that i fished, ended up at a 4sd box above a hard lid, 20'
from the access door, behind a AC duct. and shoving 120' to 150'
of 3/4" flex with a tape, even a stainless steel one, is proving difficult.
you can't rattle the tape in the pipe and hear anything well enough to
locate it by sound.....

help.....

I hope none end in a hot panel.
Put the fish in and count the footage, direction, good luck!

That's exactly what I was going to say. Be careful, I have seen it happen.

so have i.... first fish tape used was nylon....

these flexes were put in as future for CCTV... the future is now the present,
and they want to use them... contractor putting them in neglected to put
string in them, or tell anyone where they are stubbed to....

so the chances of them going into a live panel isn't huge, but given that
the contractor didn't bother to document what they did with them..... :-/
i will assume that anything is possible.

air compressor is safest method....

Dang that was my answer. Could have just been shoving 120' of fish tape into 20' of conduit.

wouldn't have been the first time..... i'm looking at a new locator.... the one
i have is good, but not suitable for the task at hand.... i'm looking at
the amprobe AT-4005CON... i'm gonna put a new thread out here, and see
if anyone has anything good to say about it.... ideal also has come out with
a high end locator in the same price range.... time to see what the collective
wisdom say.....
