In southern IN, they go by 2008 NEC. In that code era, is it still ok to tap out of a garage outlet to feed an outside outlet ? I think in later NEC books it is not allowed...? Thank you.

Under the 2008 you're OK, a later code edition changed the requirements limiting the branch circuit to just the garage.

2008 NEC:
210.52(G) Basements and Garages. For a one-family dwelling,
the following provisions shall apply:
(1) At least one receptacle outlet, in addition to those for
specific equipment, shall be installed in each basement,
in each attached garage, and in each detached garage
with electric power.
(2) Where a portion of the basement is finished into one or
more habitable rooms, each separate unfinished portion
shall have a receptacle outlet installed in accordance
with this section.

Then the 2017 added an exception......

(4) Garage Branch Circuits. In addition to the number of
branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least
one 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to
supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached
garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other
outlets.
Exception: This circuit shall be permitted to supply readily accessible
outdoor receptacle outlets.

The exception was needed because the 2014 NEC didn't allow the branch circuit to leave the garage.

2014 NEC:
210.52(G) Basements, Garages, and Accessory Buildings. For
a one-family dwelling, at least one receptacle outlet shall be
installed in the areas specified in 210.52(G)(1) through (3).
These receptacles shall be in addition to receptacles re-
quired for specific equipment.
(1) Garages. In each attached garage and in each detached
garage with electric power. The branch circuit supplying
this receptacle(s) shall not supply outlets outside of the
garage.
At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed for
each car space.

Yep I knew that, I just didn't know if you knew they added the exception.
Personally, I think they knew they screwed that up and "back tracked" on it.
Wished they would do that for AFCI!:happyyes:

Yeah a code change in every cycle for 3 or 4 cycles is ridiculous. :slaphead:
