Permanently installed air compressors
Is a permanently installed compressor permitted to be cord & plug connected? IMHO, it's not but have been wrong before & will be wrong in the future. The compressor(s) in question are vertical or horizontal tanks in the 5 - 7 1/2 HP range, could even include the shyster models w/ the "SPL" HP rating, since they are not normally pulled out to service them, IMO they should be hard wired w/ a appropriate disconnect. Is this right or wrong ?
Off topic: The spell check wanted to replace "SPL" w/ "SOL", perhaps the spell check has it right.
IMO you can be allowed under 400.7(A)(6) or (A)(8) if the install meets the req.. Seeing as it is not portable then (A)(3) would not apply
Keep in mind if it does meet 400.7 (A)(6) or (8) that you are required to use a receptacle and plug, it cannot be hardwired.
Does the compressor come with cord and plug already installed?
Is the unit listed as being portable?

Photo is my compressor during a repaint for a example.
I posted about recep ratings on GJ for you, if this is what this thread stems from.
I find all those guys and their questions help me stay code current. It seems they cook up more ways to do it wrong, that I'm constantly in the book trying to find the article to show them why!
