I just had a homeowner text me about wiring his car lift. It says it must be hooked up to 220 volt 60hz. It says it will not run on 50hz without a physical change to the motor. Does normal house power run at 60hz?

I am more surprised that someone can become a journeyman electrician and electrical contractor and not know this.
Some people reach these levels and never get too involved with theory or just how things work, they just know how to install things, though a contractor probably has a little better chance of knowing at least a little about this. Also those that only seem to work in limited areas say primarily residential work wouldn't ordinarily get as much exposure to equipment that is designed for 50Hz, 50/60Hz designed equipment is common but they never really have to think about any of the theory behind it.
