Is this a code violation?

We were wiring a refrigerated display case, and the Refrigeration guy wanted us to put a cord and plug with a receptacle at the wall on it instead of hardwiring it with the flex. We started to do it and another person stated it was a code violation to do so. Is it?

Depends in part on whether the installation instructions for the case allow cord and plug connection, as well as whether the case will be moved (for cleaning, etc?)

I see you're point. We looked at the instructions, and it does not appear to have anything saying it can have a cord and plug. It's a large unit, We do believe it would someday be moved, but that would be some years down the road if they need to repair it.

The article this guy quoted was from 400.7 and 400.8. He claims that all the units he has seen like this that the manufacturer would have already provided a cord and plug with the unit or one would specifically say what type of cord and receptacle it would need in the instructions. Cords cannot be used for a permanent or fixed wiring of a structure, and this large unit does meet the 'frequent' interchange criteria.
I guess that would be more of an interpretation of what 'frequent' is lol.
