I have equipment that is sometimes provided with a safety switch disconnect located on the equipment, and sometimes this disconnect is located external to the equipment.

If the disconnect is physically located on the equipment, is it correct to say that the "Equipment grounding conductor will connect directly to the provided terminal inside of the disconnect."

If the disconnect is located externally to the equipment, and not physically mounted on the equipment, would it then be correct to say "The equipment grounding conductor should connect directly to the protective earthing terminal located on the sub panel."

My confusion is when does the equipment grounding conductor end? Would it always connect to the main power disconnect? Or, is it always the mian protective earthing conductor connected to the equipment?

Would it be more general to say the "protective earthing system" than to say the "equipment grounding conductor".

One can call it anything that he/she wants.

But to the NEC and a common language in our trade it is "equipment grounding conductor". It starts at the panel and ends on the utilization equipment.

protective earth is an IEC term and not used in the NEC as another poster mentioned.

there is actually no requirement for the equipment grounding conductor to be a wire.it it is a wire, it will go with the circuit conductors and terminate in the same enclosure as the circuit conductors.
