I assume it was used to control the various external moving parts such as the rudder, elevator, flaps and others. The cable would be attached to levers or other devices in the cockpit and mechanically move the external control surfaces. (but that is only a guess)

Good guess, IMHO. Biplanes and other early aircraft also used tension to support and stabilize the wind structure, but those members could use less expensive wire. The braided thin stranded cable was needed to go around pulleys and through curved cable sheaths while under a high tension.
