How do you quantify what is actually possible to do?

I've heard this numerous times before that the NEC conduit sizing is more ambitious than how one really should expect to build it in the field. But how does a person calculate what to specify, so that what gets specified is practical to build?

If you know how to do the work smartly pulling all 40% that the code allows is not hard for smaller wire gauges. When you get into 300MCM and up it's worth thinking about upsizing the conduit some.
