Hey guys it's been awhile since I've done recessed lighting in a kitchen so I'm looking at getting some recommendations. I plan on adding 3 pendent lights to the island and 1 above the sink. I was think 30" out from the wall but not quite sure. I'll be going with Led 5" pot lights. The ceiling is 8ft. Any suggestions?

If i were to install general lighting, i would use (3) l.e.d. trims in an "L" configuration about a foot in fron of counter, 30- 36" away from wall. Like these:

Or these:

I installed some of each in the same room. They look exactly alike, and there is no difference in light output. Same trim imho.

Another one looks to be the same, i have not used, has a lower price:

I would use 5 lights. One directly over the sink. Three along the range wall and one in front of the fridge area. 30" may be a little close to the fridge because of crown molding around the top.

I put recessed lights 20-24 inches off the wall (to center) so they line up with the edge of the counter, and 12 inches off wall over sinks or counter spaces without upper cabinets. That way users don't get shadows from their own heads. Cans may have to get moved farther out over fridges and hoods to accommodate crown molding or to not produce glare from reflective surfaces. General lighting recessed lights should be centered over pathways or areas to be lit "generally." Don't try to light counters and provide general lighting with the same can. It won't do either job well in that case.

I think the OP had a pendant over the sink.

Also, the l.e.d. trims are so bright and have such a wide beam angle that shadowing isn't much of an issue.

I installed (7) 19w trims like the ones in the link I posted, in a kitchen 12' x 17' and the homeowners were begging for a dimmer
