If they were not needed the manufacturer would not spend the money to put them in.

I agree- the way I understand it, the glass lining is only another line of defense against corrosion and years of exposure to hot water will very slowly dissolve it and also that virtually every glass lined tank has some imperfections present in the lining that leaves very tiny areas of exposed steel and of course (as mentioned above) there could always be a crack that would compromise the protection offered by the lining.

I agree too; I should have written there is not AS MUCH need today for sacrificial anode rod as before glass lining. I think I must have gotten a tank built on Wednesday and Bubba was off sick that day so he didn't toss it into the shipping truck. Knock on wood!
