Just out of curiosity, what kind of compressor Motors are we talking about? These aren't maglev Motors or anything like that are they?
Closed transition only operates an a hot bus - hot bus transfer, i.e. during a test from the controller touchpad or during retransfer to normal after a power outage. A CT transfer switch would definitely solve the problem since the transfer sine-wave is seamless but would be much more expensive on a 1200A switch than activating and wiring in the motor load disconnect with the existing ATS.
Am I in shape?? I get plenty of exercise pushing my luck!!

Sounds like you have a "mindset education" problem rather than a technical problem.
    True

I’d get with whoever made the air compressor. Could be that something needs to be added to unload the head of the compressor. If it being done by the pressure switch you going to have a problem.

The AHJ where I am wouldn’t accept testing the generators in that manner.

See the first paragraph of post 6. The load state of the compressor is likely irrelevant.
