I received a phone call from a tool supply salesman a while ago.He was trying to sell saw blades /splicing tape and drop cloths and etc....He told me he was located in Az.I answered the call only because the number showed up as a local area code.I'm in Al.After a minute of listening to his sales pitch I declined to purchase any of the products he had to offer. He stated his name as Jack Arnold...After that he said a few vulgar words to me and hung up the phone .The phone number is not in service he called from... I'm willing to drive to Az. to respond to his comment ...Has any of you experienced a call like this from this person?

I would guess that it's a scam to get you to "order" some tools and then he has your credit card information.

The drill bit guy calls me once a week or so for the last month. # comes through as blocked (which I generally don't answer).

Now that I've been getting these calls I do answer blocked #'s.

As soon as I know it's a sales pitch I say "call me back when you have a phone # and hang up".

Haven't answered one of those calls in a few years, but I don't answer many calls if I don't know who the caller is anymore, even some that show up as local/regional numbers.

I did have several similar calls as you described years ago though. They know who to ask for, are really friendly at first and talk about general stuff to break the ice, leaving you think it is someone you maybe know or at least may be a potential customer so you stay on the line to see where this goes. Finally they start to offer their products usually saw blades, drill bits, cable ties, extension cords marked with company name, or other common items. I once hung up on the guy when he wouldn't get a clue that I wasn't interested in buying anything and he called me right back and had some pretty vulgar comments for me. If you let the voicemail/answering machine take the call - most of these type of callers don't even leave a message. Seems to have become standard practice anymore for me to not answer unless I do know who is calling - if it is important they will leave a message and I can call back.

yeah that guy from Arizona used to call me a lot, his tape met same specs as 33 but was .49 a roll! I'm not sure if it was always the same guy but if not they all sounded the same. And I was able to make him cuss me out a few times.

Somewhere along the line the calls stopped, hope they never get my celphone #

Working as a Maintenance Director in a nursing home I got stung once. Yes they are super friendly, know your first name, the ball game, the weather, hunting etc to break the ice. Then they send you unsolicited cheeep knockoff brand fluorescent lamps or other useless crap & they hope accounts payable will pay their inflated invoice.

Did you receive any saw blades, and if so were they anything worth purchasing?

yeah, i get all sorts of calls from the tool supply in arizona.
usually from "independent agents" who have cellphones all
over the US.

i also get a lot of calls from father manassas, telling me that
satan is trying to tempt me again, the US Pharmacy,
and Canadian Pharmacy, which are staffed with chinese calling
on skype, and a handful of others. they try to sell me oxycontin
and viagra over the phone.

when i get a phone call from these guys, and it can be up to three
times daily, i just sit the phone down until the call goes dead, then
put the number in my phone's kill file. my phone then doesn't ring,
accept messages or anything from them ever again.

i use a "silent iphone" ringtone that a distributor in germany made up.
works pretty well.

there are also some amusing things you can do with 100 phone numbers,
especially as some of these go right to the father manassas message running
on it's tape loop..... conference calls come to mind......

here is my blocked list, well, the first 100 anyway:

hm. there is an extended ascii in the list that MH blocks... oh, well...

That's just a trick they use.

They start the conversation with a line like, "Hey, old buddy, remember me, you ordered from us a few years ago".

I know that I would never order anything over the phone from a company that I'm not familiar with so I know I have not done business with them and know they are lieing. That's all I need to know. I hang up.

Don't get much of that, but will get cold calls from Grainger, etc, which I despise. They think the chief engineer has nothing better to do than to have me give them "a few minutes".

One from twenty years ago:
Guy calls wants to sell the maintenance supervisor (me) some super powdered cleaner - by the drum full.
Me: I can't buy anything with out having an MSDS. You'll have to send one first.

three months later: Same guy, same call
Me: We had this conversation three months ago. No MSDS - we won't even consider it.

Amazingly I get and MSDS. I give it to one of our chemists.

Some days later: Same guy, same call
Me: Oh yeah I remember, you sent us an MSDS. I gave it to our chemist. It is roughly Boraxo and Tide detergent. So, tell me again, why I would want to give you $10/lb when we could buy the drum load chemicals for 10 cents/lb?

Him: "klick"

Absolutely, a waste of an hour. But humorous.

A few years ago our maintenance department was between supervisors and the guy that was de facto in charge was talked into accepting a sample of cleaning solution by a woman from Florida. Unfortunately, it came along with an invoice for $700.

They continued to call about once a month after I took over with me getting progressively angrier with each call. I made it abundantly clear that I would not be buying anything to the point of being extremely rude. I basically had to threaten to burn the woman's house down to get her to stop calling.

In fairness it was excellent cleaner.:ashamed1:
