    Open neutral

    I disconnected the neutral from a sub panel without flipping the breaker off. Shouldn’t all those sub panel circuits be dead. Tv, wireless router, microwave clock still indicated power. Water heater gas valve control now dead and also gave off a burned electrical smell. Refrigerator not working properly. Power block for cable modem dead. Clock radio turned on by itself, now dead. Anyone venture an idea of what happened? And yes I know I’m an idiot and shouldn’t be anywhere near a main panel much less a light switch.

    A reply as a courtesy prior to closing the thread:

    Disconnecting the neutral on a 240/120 circuit places all 120v loads in series creating unstable voltages as shown in this sketch.

    That said, I will also point out to you that the various loads connected to L1 and L2 form a voltage divider across the 240V potential, with the open neutral bus being the connection between the two sides. The result is that, depending on the resistance of the things connected to both legs the voltage across each side can range from close to zero volts all the way up to close to 240V. You are fortunate the results were not worse.
