I'm talking about old school recessed lights like Lightolier units that only had a ring. How are you guys dealing with these...short of taking them out and installing new cans?

Lightolier did not have a can?
Is it just a bulb in open space above the ceiling with some kind of plaster-ring to hold trim?
Sounds like something is missing.

Stuff from the 1960s was like that

Much like a commercial can light. Plaster ring, j-box and whip. There wasn't a rough in can, the trim served that purpose (fully enclosed)

Depending on the size...they were larger than today's can lights, about 7" or a little larger

Ok, I get you now.
It's been a while since I've seen them, forgot about that.

I guess the LED bulb is the way to go.
