I see things like this often. Worst was a power pole and they shared a netral to 3 all same phase. God was looking out for them. This could easily been a fire job. Maintenance people can do some crazy things.

He says they had a commercial electrician (brother-in-law) wire their new basement addition--which looks to be true, seeing that the conduit going into the panel was professionally kicked and bent. I guess he's blaming the electrician!!

Curious ,just how long would a number 12 carry lets sat 40 amps before it starts to melt ?
For the copper - an exceptionaly long time, depending the insulation type the insulation may last under a week to a decade or more.... In free air - - not in direct sunlight - who knows how long.

I have used #12 as a replacement for the tip on my Weller soldering gun. It doesn't last as long as a real tip, but it sure melts solder.
