Can an outlet be added to existing branch circuit in living room to mount a flat screen on wall by tapping off existing outlet and not changing to AFCI breaker on circuit. Does lighting receptacle in bedrooms, living, etc... have to be AFCI in these locations if ran on a new seperate circuit?

This may depend upon where you are The language of 210.12(B) indicates all branch circuit ran in the areas listed to be AFCI

The new circuit you mention needs AFCI

The extension might be questionable.

but in MA. I say the extension requires AFCI protection.

Jaga, aren't you in NJ?? If so, you don't have to comply with the 2008 NEC until November. After that, the Rehab Code might let you get away with adding receps without AFCI's. The Rehab Code makes gray areas grayer, check with AHJ.

If your in NJ the rehab code still references the 2005 NEC and is not expected to be updated to the 2008 NEC until October. This means work done under the rehab code only has to conform to the 2005 NEC. Also if you want to be under the grace period and use the 2005 NEC you must state it on your permit application otherwise you are automaticly under the 2008 NEC.
