I have an existing 1500HP, 4160V synchronous motor with six leads exiting the bottom of the motor though an opening in the floor to the floor below. The leads are unshielded. I am replacing the motor surge protection with new and need longer motor leads.

Will NEC allow me to splice into the existing leads with unshielded cable to get the length I need? NEC requires 5kV cable to be shielded. Does this apply to motor leads??

NEC has no authority over the motor leads. Ask a motor shop to do this for you. It is a special wire and yes, it is unshielded.
