The NEC says that if you run romex above a commercial drop ceiling the romex must be secured to framing and not stung across the ceiling.

Is there a mass amendment that voids this requirement?

rcarroll:

You can use romex as long as it follows the framing or you put it on running boards.

My question is about Massachusetts amendments

No, the NEC does not allow NM (romex) above a commercial suspended ceiling at all, regardless of how its run.

This has been the NEC rule since 2002 as rcarrole pointed.

Yes there is.

The MA amendment allows what you thought the NEC allowed.

Here is the MA amendment

334.12(1). Revise to read as follows:

In dropped or suspended ceilings in other than
one- and two-family and multifamily dwellings,
unless run so as to closely follow the surface of
framing members, running boards, or the
equivalent, or unless connected to luminaires
(lighting fixtures) in accordance with
334.30(B)(2).

I stand corrected.

I am probably getting the Massachusetts amendment and the NEC confused.

What I am trying find out is what is the Mass. amendment to the restriction of running romex in a commercial drop ceiling.

Starting to wonder about Ma.,seems anything they don't want to do or like they just change .

Yes Jim we have about 60 to 70 changes from the NEC and each and everyone of them is actually written down and enforced uniformly across the State.

Kind of funny as the home of the NFPA is right here in MA about 20 minutes from my home yet we do not use the NEC as they write it.

Here is MA amendment I really enjoy.

90.4. Revise the first paragraph to read as follows:
90.4 Enforcement. This Code shall be used by the
authority enforcing the Code and exercising legal
jurisdiction over electrical installations. The authority
having jurisdiction of enforcement of the Code
shall accept listed and labeled equipment or materials
where used or installed in accordance with instructions
included with the listing or labeling.
The
authority shall have the responsibility for deciding
upon the approval of unlisted or unlabeled equipment
and materials, and for granting the special
permission contemplated in a number of the rules.

If it's listed they can't say no. 8)
