I have been given a drawing of a low voltage 3-phase system that shows a separate lightning arrestor and surge arrestor, at the input from the service.

I went to the ABB site and looked these devices up, and although they indicate them as a "Lightning Arrestor" and "Surge Arrestor", i.e. separate devices, they categorize them as Type 1 and Type 2, SPD's, respectively.

So, what would be any advantage of providing separate devices on a LV system, or are these actually just SPD Category 1 and Catrgory 2 devices? But if so, why Cat 1 and Cat 2 both on at the same location?

Only qualified expertise need apply........:D

I am probably not the expertise you are calling for but Lightning is the most frequent of the bad guys,,,,,,,, so you need a Lightning Arrestors,,,,,,,,,,,large electrical equipment when cycling can also create surges so if these users can get on your LV system,,,,,,, now you need a Surge Arrestor as well, your client may want to record surge types with monitor equipment as well, just a thought.
