Do light fixtures have to be UL certified to be installed on a home? We have a project with hundreds of imported light fixtures which have no labels of any kind and no UL stamp...

Art. 90.7 states that if a piece of equipment has been listed by a qualified testing laboratory (UL is one) then it shall conform to the code. IMO, If it has not been listed then it is up to the AHJ whether or not to accept the installation.

The NEC does not require listed products, however, there is at least one state (NC) that requires equipment to be listed. I would check with the state you live in and with the local inspector to see if the fixtures you want to install will be suitable, esp. before you install hundreds of them.

You can hire an engineer that works under UL that will come to the site to certify these fixtures. Around 8 years ago it cost about $400. He was there about an hour and we got the letter in a week.

We installed a hot tub one time, outside on a house, and it didn't have a UL listing. Some of the individual components were UL listed, but the tub as a whole didn't have a listing. The inspector rejected it, and the HO would have to get an engineer, etc. That was in Denver.

Check with your AHJ for sure.
We just went through this (still not settled) down here.
Most of the fixtures are up and the AHJ has stated that until we show him a label on each and every fixture, there will be no final.

If it is not UL labeled then it does not have to be UL labeled. There are many testing labs out there that will lable the fixtures and many are cheaper and have a quicker response time than UL. (ETL, Intertek, MET, Inchcape, etc)
